The Wednesday Edit: The Layering Tee Is Back

man wearing the two layered t-shirts - black and white

There are trends you admire from a distance. And then there are the ones you can actually wear.

The layered T-shirt is officially making its way back into the conversation — the short-sleeve-over-long-sleeve combination that defined a certain corner of late-'90s and early-2000s style. Only this time around, it feels cleaner, more considered and considerably easier to wear.

And we're here for it.

Because beneath all the nostalgia is something we've always believed: a great T-shirt doesn't need much to make an outfit work. Sometimes, it just needs another great T-shirt.

Welcome to this week's Wednesday Edit.

The Layered T-Shirt Is Having a Moment Again

Fashion has a habit of bringing back the pieces we thought we'd left behind.

Over the past few seasons, relaxed denim has returned. Sneakers have gotten simpler. Fits have loosened up. And now, the layered T-shirt is quietly working its way back into everyday style.

The original version leaned heavily into skater culture, alternative music and the casual uniform of the early 2000s: a graphic short-sleeve T-shirt thrown over a contrasting long sleeve.

The 2026 version is different.

Lose the oversized graphics. Clean up the colors. Pay attention to fit.

Suddenly, the look feels less like a costume from another decade and more like something you could wear right now.

That's the version we're interested in.

How to Wear the Layered T-Shirt Now

The easiest way to modernize the look is to start with solid color T-shirts.

Without logos and graphics competing for attention, the silhouette becomes the story.

Start with a comfortable long-sleeve tee as your base. Add a short-sleeve crewneck over it. Then keep everything else uncomplicated — relaxed denim, chinos or clean trousers and your favourite sneakers.

The trick is contrast without chaos.

Black + White

Probably the easiest place to start.

Try a white long sleeve under a black short sleeve for strong contrast, or reverse the combination for a lighter look.

Add straight-leg denim and simple sneakers.

Done.

Navy + Blue

For something quieter, stay within the same color family.

A navy long sleeve paired with a softer blue short sleeve creates just enough contrast to make the layering intentional without making it the loudest thing you're wearing.

This is the grown-up version of the trend.

Black + Charcoal

If your wardrobe lives somewhere between black, grey and more black, don't fight it.

Layer charcoal and black together and let the slight difference in tone do the work.

Dark denim or black trousers finish it beautifully.

Burgundy + Black

This one gets especially good as we move toward fall.

Burgundy brings warmth while black keeps the combination grounded. Wear it with dark denim and you've got an easy weekend look that feels far more considered than a sweatshirt and jeans.

Why We Like This Trend

Because you don't actually have to follow the trend.

That's the beauty of it.

Take the layers apart and you still have two pieces that belong in your wardrobe.

Wear the short-sleeve T-shirt alone now.

Reach for the long sleeve when the temperature drops.

Layer the two together when you want to do something a little different.

One short sleeve. One long sleeve. Three ways to wear them.

That's a trend we can get behind.

The Fit Matters

Layering two T-shirts can go wrong quickly when there's too much fabric involved.

The long sleeve should sit comfortably against the body without feeling restrictive. Your short sleeve should have enough room to layer over it without pulling through the chest or shoulders.

You also want the neckline of the short sleeve to sit cleanly rather than collapsing over the layer underneath.

And this is where construction matters.

Our tees use side-seamed construction, which helps create a cleaner silhouette and more consistent shape than a basic tubular T-shirt.

When you're wearing two tees together, those little details become much more noticeable.

Start With Better Basics

There's another reason this particular trend caught our attention.

It makes a pretty good case for owning fewer, better pieces.

You don't need a special "layering outfit" that gets worn twice before disappearing into the back of the closet.

You need T-shirts you already want to wear.

Our short- and long-sleeve tees are made with premium combed and ring-spun cotton for a soft, comfortable feel, with lightweight construction that makes layering easier.

Wear them separately 95% of the time.

Then, when the mood strikes, put them together.

That's what a useful wardrobe should do.

For this week's edit, we're putting the spotlight on our Men's 2-Pack T-Shirt Bundles — pairings that give you one short-sleeve tee and one long-sleeve tee in combinations designed to work together and apart.

Go classic with black and white.

Keep things tonal with navy and blue.

Bring in color with burgundy, green, red or something a little less expected.

There isn't one right combination.

The best one is the one you'll keep wearing long after the trend moves on.

Three Looks. Two T-Shirts.

If you're wondering whether you'll actually wear both pieces, here's the test.

LOOK ONE — SHORT SLEEVE

Short-sleeve tee + jeans + sneakers.

The everyday uniform.

LOOK TWO — LONG SLEEVE

Long-sleeve tee + chinos + casual jacket.

Easy when the temperature starts dropping.

LOOK THREE — LAYERED

Long sleeve + short sleeve + relaxed denim.

A little Y2K. A lot more 2026.

Same two T-shirts. Completely different feel.

A Trend Worth Keeping

We don't believe in rebuilding your wardrobe every time fashion decides something is "in."

The better approach?

Pay attention to the trends that show you new ways to wear what already works.

That's exactly what the layered T-shirt does.

It takes two of the simplest pieces in a man's wardrobe and makes them feel new again.

Wear them together today.

Wear them separately tomorrow.

And when everyone moves on to the next big thing?

You'll still have two really good T-shirts.

That's The Wednesday Edit.
