T-Shirt Fabric Guide: Cotton, Heather & Tri-Blend

You don't need to know everything about textiles to choose a great T-shirt.
Start with how you want it to feel.
COTTON
Crisp. Breathable. Classic.
There's a reason the cotton T-shirt became a wardrobe essential.
Our solid cotton tees are made with 100% combed ring-spun cotton, creating a smooth, soft fabric with enough structure to hold that classic T-shirt shape.
It's breathable. Lightweight. Easy to layer. And just as good tucked into trousers as it is worn with your oldest pair of jeans.
If what you're looking for is the unmistakable feel of a great cotton tee, start here.
FEELS LIKE: Smooth, soft and breathable
WEARS LIKE: A classic everyday T-shirt

HEATHER
Soft. Easy. Lived-in.
Heather is what happens when the classic T-shirt gets a little more relaxed.
By blending combed ring-spun cotton with polyester, you get a softer hand, subtle visual texture and that comfortable, broken-in feeling you usually have to wait for.
The color has more dimension than a traditional solid. The fabric feels easy from the first wear. And the overall look lands somewhere between polished and perfectly undone.
The T-shirt you'll reach for when you're not thinking about what to wear.
Which, conveniently, is most days.
FEELS LIKE: Soft and already broken-in
WEARS LIKE: Relaxed and effortless
DRAPE: Easy with a little less structure
BEST FOR: Everyday comfort with subtle texture

TRI-BLEND
Fluid. Lightweight. Effortless.
If softness is your deciding factor, meet your T-shirt.
Tri-Blend combines cotton, polyester and rayon to create a lighter, exceptionally soft fabric with noticeably more movement and drape.
Rayon is what helps give Tri-Blend its fluid feel. Instead of sitting away from the body like a more structured cotton tee can, the fabric falls naturally and moves with you.
The result is relaxed without looking careless.
Soft from day one. Even better once it's yours.
FEELS LIKE: Lightweight and exceptionally soft
WEARS LIKE: Relaxed with natural movement
DRAPE: Fluid and easy
BEST FOR: Anyone who puts softness first

THERE'S NO “BEST” FABRIC.
There's only the one that feels best to you.
That's the point.
Some people want the familiar structure and breathability of cotton. Others want the lived-in softness of a Heather. And some won't give up the fluid feel of a Tri-Blend once they've tried one.
Your perfect T-shirt doesn't have to be everyone else's.
THE 10-SECOND FABRIC TEST.
Still deciding?
Make it easy.
Want classic + breathable?
Choose COTTON.
Want soft + lived-in?
Choose HEATHER.
Want lightweight + fluid?
Choose TRI-BLEND.
STILL CAN'T DECIDE?
Try one of each.
You may discover there's room in your closet for all three.

WHAT MAKES A COTTON T-SHIRT FEEL BETTER?
Here's where things get a little more interesting.
You'll see words like ring-spun, combed, single jersey and 32 singles on T-shirt descriptions.
They sound impressive.
But what do they actually mean?
Let's translate.
IT STARTS WITH THE YARN.

WHAT IS RING-SPUN COTTON?
Cotton doesn't begin as the smooth yarn you eventually wear.
The fibres need to be spun together to create yarn, and the way they're spun makes a difference.
With ring-spun cotton, the fibres are continuously twisted and refined into a finer, smoother yarn.
For you, that means something much simpler:
A smoother surface.
A softer hand.
A stronger yarn.
A better-feeling T-shirt.
That's why ring-spun cotton is so commonly associated with premium tees.
AND WHAT DOES “COMBED” MEAN?

Before the cotton becomes your T-shirt, an additional combing process helps remove shorter fibres and impurities while aligning the remaining fibres.
What's left is a cleaner, more consistent yarn.
Think of it as editing.
Take away what doesn't need to be there and what's left gets better.
The result is fabric that feels smoother and softer against your skin.
It's why we don't simply say cotton.
We choose combed ring-spun cotton.
WHAT DOES “32 SINGLES” MEAN?

This one sounds far more complicated than it needs to.
“Singles” refers to the fineness of the yarn used to knit the fabric.
Generally, a higher singles number means a finer yarn. Finer yarns can create the smooth, lightweight hand associated with premium modern T-shirts.
Many of our tees use 32-singles yarn to deliver that lightweight, smooth feel without turning the shirt into something delicate you don't want to actually wear.
Because we're still making T-shirts for real life.
WHAT IS SINGLE JERSEY?

You probably already own it.
Single jersey is one of the most common knit constructions used for T-shirts.
Look closely at the outside of a jersey T-shirt and you'll see tiny vertical V-shaped stitches. The inside looks different, with small horizontal loops.
That knit construction gives the fabric natural flexibility and helps create the soft, comfortable feel we associate with a classic T-shirt.
Simple construction.
Very good T-shirt.
DOES A HEAVIER T-SHIRT MEAN A BETTER T-SHIRT?

No.
Fabric weight tells you about weight, not quality.
A heavyweight T-shirt can be beautifully made.
So can a lightweight one.
What changes is the wearing experience.
Lighter fabrics tend to feel more breathable and easy against the body. Heavier fabrics generally provide more structure and substance.
Neither is automatically better.
It's another version of the same rule:
Choose the feel you actually want to wear.
WHAT ABOUT PIMA AND SUPIMA COTTON?

Pima is an extra-long-staple cotton prized for characteristics such as softness and strength.
Supima® is a trademarked designation for American-grown Pima cotton that meets the organization's sourcing and quality requirements.
They're excellent fibres.
But they're also different from terms such as ring-spun and combed.
Pima and Supima describe the type/source of cotton fibre, while ring-spun and combed describe aspects of how cotton fibres are processed into yarn.
That's an important distinction when comparing T-shirts.
And it's why we believe customers deserve more information than a premium-sounding word on a product page.
WHAT ABOUT PRE-SHRUNK?

Because your T-shirt should still be your T-shirt after laundry day.
Cotton naturally has the potential to shrink when exposed to heat and moisture.
Pre-shrinking the fabric helps reduce dimensional change after you bring the shirt home.
Does that mean a T-shirt can never change size?
No.
Heat still matters, which is why we recommend following the care instructions for your tee.
But starting with pre-shrunk fabric helps make the fit more predictable.
The fit you bought should be the fit you get to keep enjoying.
FABRIC IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
THE PERFECT STANDARD™
We can talk about fibres, yarn and fabric all day.
But a great T-shirt isn't made from one impressive-sounding ingredient.
It's the sum of the details.
How the fabric is chosen.
How the shirt is constructed.
How it fits through the shoulders.
How it falls through the body.
How the seams sit.
And how it feels after you've worn it enough times to stop thinking about it.
That's why we pay attention to details you might not notice immediately:
Premium combed ring-spun cotton.
Lightweight, breathable fabrics.
Side-seamed construction.
Pre-shrunk fabric.
Thoughtful fits.
Tag-free comfort.
Because we're not particularly interested in making the T-shirt you wear once.
We want to make the one you reach for again tomorrow.
MADE TO WEAR IN, NOT OUT.
